In order for our students to really be "figuring it out", phenomena must be a central component in our K-12 science classrooms. That sounds simple enough, but how do we actually do that? This session will explore why using phenomena is important for science instruction, how using phenomena has changed with the Next Generation Science Standards, the different types of phenomena, & what free resources are currently available to help teachers do this easily and effectively!
Explore the role of inquiry in NGSS and strategies for making scientific inquiry more authentic. Compare authentic inquiry with "hands-on" learning and discover how to adapt existing activities to better support the spirit of NGSS.
With NGSS, teachers are needing to give students more responsibility with learning science content. Open ended, hands on activities are the ideal way. But it can be intimidating to know how or when to allow this type of learning to happen. I will help you learn how to let go of lectures and hold on to fun engaging activities for your students.
